Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) based in Kolkata recently launched the INS Androth, an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) shallow-watercraft for the Indian Navy. The vessel is the first of a series of eight built by GRSE under the government’s “Make in India” initiative, and is being touted as the “Most Silent Ship” due to its advanced stealth features.
With a length of 50 meters and the ability to reach a top speed of 25 knots, the INS Androth is designed to operate in both shallow and deep waters, making it a versatile addition to the Indian Navy fleet. It is equipped with advanced features such as the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) and the Integrated Bridge System (IBS) to control and monitor onboard systems and sensors. The ship also has an advanced sonar system to detect and track submarines from a distance.
The vessel’s stealth features are a significant breakthrough for the Indian Navy as it makes it almost impossible to detect and track by enemy submarines. Its advanced acoustic and magnetic signatures reduction features make it highly effective in conducting covert operations and maintaining operational secrecy.
The launch of the INS Androth is a significant step towards enhancing India’s indigenous defense capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The GRSE shipyard has a long history of building warships for the Indian Navy and has been involved in several prestigious projects, including the construction of the Kolkata-class destroyers, the first of which was commissioned in 2014.
The INS Androth is an excellent example of the country’s indigenous shipbuilding prowess, which is a crucial component of the government’s “Make in India” initiative. The launch of the “Most Silent Ship” marks a significant achievement for the Indian Navy and the GRSE shipyard and will undoubtedly strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.
